The most important first check is the mushroom material. Fruiting body is the visible mushroom, while mycelium is the fungal network that grows through a substrate. Mycelium is not automatically inferior: one published human trial used a standardized erinacine-A mycelium product. The problem is mycelium grown on grain when the harvested material includes residual rice, oats or other substrate. That residual grain contributes starch and can dilute the amount of fungal material per gram. Prefer labels that explicitly state 100% fruiting body, or a clearly standardized mycelium ingredient that identifies its marker compound and excludes residual grain. Beta-glucan disclosure is more useful than a vague total-polysaccharide percentage. Polysaccharides are a broad carbohydrate category that can include mushroom beta-glucans, alpha-glucans and grain starch. A beta-(1,3)(1,6)-glucan result is a more specific fungal-material marker, although it does not measure every mushroom compound or establish an outcome by itself. The strongest labels state beta-glucans in milligrams or as a percentage and make a lot-specific certificate available. A large polysaccharide number without separate beta- and alpha-glucan results should not be treated as proof of potency. Extraction also changes what the dose represents.
